Do you remember the Maslow hierarchy of needs we learned in Elementary school right? (picture below) Well, every product we see out there serves a purpose and a fulfills a need in our lives. We buy food because without it we die, this fulfills our survival needs. We buy beds because we need to sleep and we need to sleep comfortably. We buy and identify with a certain style of fashion or accessories because we need to attract like minded people so that we build a friendships, relationships and families. We invest in education so that we can build a reputable career or at least a decent modest good living. Finally when we achieve all of the above we seek to use our creativity, to express ourselves and this last step is self-actualization.
People who buy Art are people who are on the self-actualization phase. They want to become the best version of them selves. They usually have found a vocation or a certain level of success in their life and are no longer in the survival mode. People who have achieved great things in life and want to celebrate that by adorning their house with stories and inspiration. Because that is what Art is, Art is not just paint on paper or canvas. Art is a story, Art is a conversation starter when someone comes into your house, Art is inspiration. That is essentially what you are buying.
People who seek inspiration are higher thinkers, they seek to read, to find out more about the world, they are curious, they are cultured. Not everyone buys Art from Artist. A lot of people buy Art from Ikea or Target but People who buy Art from Artists are special kind of people. These are people who appreciate the artistry, the business behind it, the story of the Artist and somehow they relate to the Artist in being creators.
It’s really heart wrenching when we see these amazing Artist like Chadwick Boseman pass away, but what’s amazing is that we still have his legacy to celebrate and even though we begin to celebrate more once they are gone because we feel that sense of loss, we should always celebrate Art. Why? Because when we see Artist practicing and sharing their Art, it’s an indication that our society is passed survival mode, that we have food and shelter and we can use our creativity to express ourselves.
In times of war or famine Artist or creative people have to use their creativity to survive to feed themselves, but that’s not the case in our society. Most Artist choose to practice Art as a form of self-expression, and that is a really good indication. When we no longer see an abundance of Art, of poems, of music created, or film being created, we should start worrying. But for now we should seek inspiration and support their work by watching their films, sharing their work, purchasing their work, attending plays etc!
So here's to living in a society where creativity is used to express emotion and not merely stay alive, that deserves celebration!
